I have been asked many times why the Crown Holders mixtapes are named after video games. Well here is my explanation...
Our first mixtape series, aptly named 'Ultimate Alliance', is the introduction to Crown Holders. It was the first full project that combined J-Dub & Comodity. An ultimate alliance of sorts.
The mixtape was named after a game series that the two of us are quite fond of. The game features action, adventure, comedy, and a lot of heroics. That is what we feel like we deliver to the hip hop world.
As we sat back and looked at what hip hop was offering to listeners, we realized that a savior was needed. There was a lack of seriousness in what is called 'the hip hop game'. Key word... "game".
Whenever C and I play a co-op game, we become determined to beat it. We slave away for hours upon hours until our task is complete. It brings out the best in our communication, teamwork, competitiveness, focus, and determination. That is exactly what comes out whenever we tackle our music as well.
So the correlation between music and video games was easy for us to make.
Also, if you look at the album covers for the Ultimate Alliance series, it seems as though we are just lost in a video game. But they say so much more than that. Imagine that the 'game' that we are playing is hip hop. Now look at our reactions to what we are seeing. Our faces show a mix of confusion, confidence, and the readiness to conquer. That accurately represents how we felt about hip hop at both moments in time.
Success is the only option.
Ultimate Alliance 2 should be the end of the UA series for us. (Unless there's a really good part 3 to the game. lol...) But look forward to more of our mixtapes being named after video games.
Actually, if you listen to us closely, you might already know what the next game will be. :-)
Game on!
