Debate--Hip Hop Ciphers

Debate--Hip Hop Ciphers
I had an argument--wait no, it was more like a debate..
I had a debate with an acquaintance this morning about Part 3 of the BET Hip Hop Awards cipher. The cipher began with a verse from Mos Def. His verse was one that I've heard before. Its one of my favorite Mos verses, so I wasn't mad at him, he definitely represented BK well! The second emcee to spit was The Roots' Black Thought, a monster. If you don't know Black Thought, you don't know how Phili gets down, the man murdered! And then of course, to put the nail on the coffin--Eminem....wow, this blog has the potential to be a little biased. Haha--not really.
The discussion began with James (my acquaintance), Marcus (some other guy) and me talking bout Mos Def's verse. He was disappointed that the verse was recycled and he mentioned that it should have been an actual freestyle. But really, did ANYONE freestyle in those ciphers (other than KRS One)? Honestly...rappers don't freestlye anymore (unless you're KRS One). Its SO rare to come across a cipher and actually hear someone rapping LITERALLY off the top (unless its KRS is there). Its normal, now, for rappers to just walk into a circle of people and spit a verse they just memorized...and there's nothing wrong with that! Oh and well, KRS' verse was freestyle...but he can do that. Haha--I knew that once I argued that point, he was going to say something that was going to hit a nerve...I could FEEL IT!
Marcus and I then spoke about Black Thought's verse. We both agreed that he killed. But...when I said "Yeah, I really enjoyed his verse." James cut in and said "Nah that's not enough! You can't just 'enjoy' a verse like that. It went HARD! You should say you LOVED it!" Marcus rolled his eyes...then I thought..."Yeah...and because YOU loved it, I should too, because the only person in the world who's allowed to have an opinion is...James. Hm..."
I held my tongue despite the slow, angering feeling building in the pit of my stomach towards James. I think Marcus could sense my anger cause I hadn't said anything for, what felt like, a full 30 seconds before responding to James' unenthusiastic sentence that started with "Oh yeah...and then...Eminem." Which was (my reply -->) "Oh yeah...well he killed. He was a good choice to end the ciphers. His verse was insane." And it was! But according to James, it was wack...-_- really, Jim? "Man, I hate people that think they know Hip Hop," he began, "just because they like a rapper that raps too fast or says some smart sh*t that not everyone can understand. That's why Lupe's not hot. And that's why I don't like n*ggas like Jay-Z."
I think I almost lost it right then and there. But I wasn't gonna scream at the guy. I'd probably end up saying something 'too smart for him to understand.' But I wasn't about to let him insult 3 rappers that LIVE in my top 5 favorite emcees list! Eff that! "James, with all due respect," I said with a smirk on my face "Do you ENJOY sounding like an idiot? Do you have any idea how dumb you sound? Saying that I don't know Hip Hop because I enjoy listening to artists who say things that YOU can't comprehend is ignorant. And its sad. Its impossible to think LESS of someone who's SMARTER than you. Plus, Hip Hop is about diversity. We have artists like Gucci Mayne and Lupe Fiasco making music in the same genre and are able to co-exist! That's diversity! But people who only listen to one type of artist for reasons like 'Oh, they say things too smart for me to get' is straight up RETARDED. Read a damn book, pick up a dictionary. Explore music, don't stay stuck on the Island of Stupid...that's an ugly island...but you're probably stranded, huh?"
Then James walked away, leaving Marcus standing next to me, staring with his jaw on the floor. He told me he was surprised James didn't hit me...but I was happy with myself. I may not have gotten through to James...but I KNOW I got my point across. So I won the debate...and I rock =)

Book Review: 'Bereolaesque'
After reading an online review of a new book entitled 'Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman & Etiquette Book for the Urban Sophisticate' I knew that I had to read it for myself. For quite some time I have been saying that the presence of the 'gentleman' has been on a steady decline. Someone needs to speak to this generation of young men that have no idea how to behave themselves in the corporate or social worlds.
And just when I thought this downward spiral would continue, here comes this book. While waiting for my book to be shipped to me I began following the author, Enitan O. Bereola II, on twitter, (@bereolaesque). The little tidbits that this man was sharing was exactly what I think ever young man, and woman, should hear. That was another thing that I loved... his tips are not just for gentlemen, but for ladies as well.
Anyway, when I finally received the book I read it cover to cover in one night. It was an easy read and definitely reinforced many of my thoughts about being a young, intelligent, sophisticated, dignified man in this world. It was nice to see some of the points that I had already known because that showed me that my mother was already raising me well.
Long story short, I recommend this book for anyone trying to better themselves in any way. And good news ladies... Bereola's next book will be geared towards you.

"Knock Knock" (National Poetry Day)
Since today is National Poetry Day, (in Britain), I felt that it was only right to speak on this. It is no surprise that poetry is closely related to Hip Hop. In many cases I have written songs that are literally poetry placed on top of music. I encourage everyone to keep their creative juices flowing as much as they can. Whether it be poetry, hip hop, spoken word, whatever... let your mind grow and express itself as often as possible.

Doo Doo Mamas
Doo Doo Mamas...
I've recently just come to the realization that doo doo mamas have no idea that they are doo doo mamas!!! That scares the hell out of me. But think about it... doo doos walk the Earth acting like they're just as sexy and pretty as the next girl. Which is not a good look, cause I believe that if you THINK you're pretty, you can attract a member of the opposite sex. Which is also not a good look!
I've been studying the nature of the doo doo mama. The girl whose behavior I was studying had a boyfriend, a few tattoos and an attitude like someone on perminant PMS. She did have a name, but we'll just call her... ... ...Heather (idk, don't ask).
Heather wore short shorts for the first 3 days of my study, despite the cellulite on her thighs. She wore weeve, of course. There is nothing wrong with weeve in my opinion...unless its colored. Heather's weeve had 3 different colors. The more I watched her for this study, the more I disliked her. But that's just the nature that comes with being around a doo doo mama. Slight hatred from the people around her. The doo doo mama will call you a "hater" for criticizing any way that she dresses or any flaw in her character. That's just because her subconscious is the only thing in her that knows she's a doo doo mama.
Her boyfriend's name was... ... ...Michael (again, don't ask). He was a strapping young fellow, eager to play basketball in college or rap...or something. He wore flannel shirts and skinny jeans and had perfected the dance move currently known as "The Reject". But a reject he was not...or was he? In my opinion, this boy looked like he could get a girl better looking than Heather. But he almost refused. He and I engaged in friendly conversation and he referred to his beloved Heather as "Wifey"...I began to slightly dislike Michael too. But not only because he was an idiot, which he was. I began to slightly hate him simply because he had no ambition. Ambition should start by setting your standards for the opposite sex...and here he was, Michael, in all his retardation, setting the bar extremely low...
Heather opened my eyes to the doo doo mama in other ways, also. Music, for one! Doo doo mamas HATE female artists (and celebrities for that matter). Heather particularly hated Beyonce, former member of the Destiny's Child singing group and wife of Jay-Z...best rapper ever. Michael had grown an large infatuation with Beyonce over the years, and Heather resented Beyonce for it. Before becoming Michael's "Wifey", Heather told me that she loved Beyonce, she listened to her almost religiously and even aspired to sing like her (I made the mistake of letting her sing her favorite Beyonce song for me... ...not a good decision on my part). But as soon as Michael "wifed her up"...(raises eyebrow)...she decided Beyonce was a b*tch. A b*tch! It saddened me to see the angry look in her eyes. I wasn't sad for Beyonce...nor was my sorrow for Heather or Michael. It was self pity...yes, my sorrow was for myself, that I had decided to conduct a study on such a retarded subject.
I made the decision to try and convince Heather that the doo doo mama lifestyle was not a way to live. But she simply said to me as she patted the purple part of her weeve down with her left and and scratched the orange/red part with the other: "I'm not no damn doo doo mama. Ya mama's a doo doo mama N*GGA!...now..." and she chewed loudly on her gum.
In closing... ...I have no idea why I spent a week following a doo doo mama, documenting her life and in the end, trying to persuade her to be a respectable black woman. It was as pointless as trying to prevent Michael Vick from making dogs kill each other two years ago... ...low blow? Sorry.

TLC to Perform After 7-Year Break
T-Boz and Chilli are set to reunite in order to play their first concert U.S. concert in 7 years! This concert, hosted by Justin Timberlake, will be a benefit concert that will highlight a weeklong golf tournament in Las Vegas from Oct. 11-18, called the 2009 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Ciara, Alicia Keys, and Taylor Swift are also on the star-studded bill. Last year’s concert featured Rihanna, 50 Cent, and Leona Lewis, among others.
This will be really good to see!

Somber times
So many unexpected things happen to us in our lives. Most we can bounce back from. But some, some just seem too hard to do so. It's in those moments that our strength, faith and character is tested. We may not always know the reasons for these tests, but we must remember that they are here to make us stronger, not to tear us down.
If you love someone, tell them. Tell them sincerely and often. You never know which time might be the last.
Best wishes to the families and friends of all those who we have lost recently.
A person's true legacy is how they live on in the hearts and minds of the people they've affected in this world.

I don't mean to boast but....Damn If I Don't Brag!
Haha... Yesterday I was hangin' out with a friend. We were waiting for my dude Chris at a park so we could play a few games of basketball. So the first park we hit was North Hollywood park. We never ball there cause the courts are always crowded by a bunch of dudes who swear they're playin' in the NBA. But it was the closest park to me so...yeah. Haha. Soon as we walked into the park, we saw a small circle of people in a shaded section, and one guy was rapping. For some reason, when I see a cipher, I start walking UBER fast. And then at the last minute I try and slow down to make it look like I'm just a regular passerby who's just interested in listening to a bunch of guys rap.
I forgot that half of Noho knows me as that kiid who "Goes Hard". If you ask a random dude in Noho if he knows Comodity, he'll say "Yeah that's my n*gga. He goes hard!" And if he doesn't know me by my name, all you have to do is say "That dude that everyone says 'Goes Hard'?"... Guaranteed response: "Oh yeah! That's my n*gga! He goes hard!" Haha, so I walk up and one guy looks at me and says "YES!! YES!! Yo, this guy goes hard, let him spit a few man." So I did, and I almost kinda surprised myself. Honestly, I haven't been in a really good cipher in MONTHS. I've still had only one EPIC cipher, but remind me to tell you guys about that in another blog (J-Dub & Comodity vs. 5 ugly rappers @ the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood). But lost one haha), went to leave and headed for the parking lot...aaand sure enough there was a large circle of people surrounding a guy rapping. I pretty much ran to this one! Hahaha. The crowd was REALLY pleased with what I had to say in that cipher. I couldn't even get through half of my verses cause my lines kept making people say "OOOOOOHHH" too loudly. It felt good!! Oh, and you already know, I represented Royal Fam and Crown Holders to the FULLEST! Always! Haha.

I forgot that half of Noho knows me as that kiid who "Goes Hard". If you ask a random dude in Noho if he knows Comodity, he'll say "Yeah that's my n*gga. He goes hard!" And if he doesn't know me by my name, all you have to do is say "That dude that everyone says 'Goes Hard'?"... Guaranteed response: "Oh yeah! That's my n*gga! He goes hard!" Haha, so I walk up and one guy looks at me and says "YES!! YES!! Yo, this guy goes hard, let him spit a few man." So I did, and I almost kinda surprised myself. Honestly, I haven't been in a really good cipher in MONTHS. I've still had only one EPIC cipher, but remind me to tell you guys about that in another blog (J-Dub & Comodity vs. 5 ugly rappers @ the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood). Anticipation is half the fun
I can't believe how excited I am for this Crown Holders project. It's like that feeling of making my first album all over again. The music that myself and Comodity are making feels so good to be a part of. It's funny, because I'm anticipating the mixtape and the album like I've never heard the music. But I was definitely there every step of the way. lol...
I feel like the Crown Holders projects will give you (the fans) a great representation of who we are as artists. You would think that our solo work would do a better job of this, but working together is making our styles evolve so much. I've never heard myself flow the way I am right now. I've never puts words together like this before. And neither has Comodity. We're both in rare form right now.
I've always loved my own music. I've always made music that felt right in my heart. Music that I would never be ashamed of. But for the first time I feel like a fan. A fan of myself. But not just a J-Dub fan. And not just a Comodity fan. But a Crown Holders fan! And no matter how you got to the Crown Holders, whether you were a J-Dub fan, a Comodity fan, or we're brand new to you, I really feel that everyone will like what they hear with what we've got going now.
That's the goal.
Until then... I'm waiting with all of you.

I'm gonna wig out!
So I'm sure that everyone has seen the recent barrage of women cutting/shaving their hair. I'm curious as to what everyone else feels about this growing trend. Is it the hottest thing to do right now, or is it a straight up style faux pas?
I recently saw a girl at the beach rocking "the Cassie". But she had the right side of her head shaved and the rest in individuals (braids). Now is that taking it too far??
I'm personally not a big fan of this new style. For instance, I thought Cassie was the flyest girl out... But now, I feel like it went a step too far. But maybe I'm just unenlightened.

Music... Hip Hop Especially.
It's like my girlfriend.
I really view music (Hip Hop especially) and look at it like its my girl. The last track on my debut album PRINCE is called "My Fist Up"--I'm telling a story about Hip Hop as a woman who was killed that I was IN love with.
But really--not to contradict myself--Hip Hop's not dead. It IS very much alive... it just isn't what it used to be. I feel like I'm in a relationship with HER...and she's turned to the wrong crowd. She's gotten HERself into the things that she wasn't into when HER and I first got together. In the beginning of our relationship, she would shut down all the people who would try to influence HER badly. But something happened somewhere in 2006... One horrible artist became a fan favorite, and she let that drug get a hold of HER. It kept HER. And we all know that one drug leads to another, so she's been intoxicated ever since.
I spoke to an old friend not too long ago, who doesn't know much about Hip Hop, and he said "So have you been shot yet? You can't get signed unless you have at least 3 bullet wounds." I've never laughed so hard..
So what do you do when you see the one you love ruin HER life and slowly kill HERself? I know some people would walk away after trying so hard to change their love and make things the way they used to be... But dammit, I'm determined. It's GOING to happen. Hip Hop's gonna go back to the fun it used to be! I don't even need to speak on the subject any further. I'll just say this:

Inspiration
I am so torn with the way I feel about Hip Hop as of late. I love Hip Hop. I eat it and breathe it. I'm inspired by it. By the lyrics, by the music, by the characters.
But recently I have found it harder and harder to be inspired by what I'm hearing.
It's like playing basketball. (Or any sport.) To get better you have to play with the best. They make you want to up your game. But it's hard to find those now who make me want to up my game. So that leaves me uninspired.
But at the same time, I feel like it's now my responsibility to inspire others. Somebody has to be Kobe, right? (I guess Comodity is LeBron. Haha...)
So here I am. Uninspired yet being forced to inspire. But that's what makes the greats great huh? The ability to move towards a goal that you can't yet see. And be able to bring others with you.
Hmm... I'm up for it!

Two of the Royal Family's most noted emcees have joined forces to bring you the next generation of the hip hop duo; following the likes of groups such as Outkast and Method Man & Redman. The chemistry between J-Dub and Comodity is undeniable and their music shows for it. Their songs always guarantee a balance of laughs, thought-provoking lines, and hard-hitting music.
If you feel like you've seen these two before, you're eyes are not playing tricks on you. Both 'Crown Holders' have had established careers in the entertainment industry. Not only are they both rapper/producers, but they also have both had their share of fame as actors. J-Dub, most notably known for his role on 'In The House', and Comodity, most known for his roles in 'Hardball' and 'All That', both know what it takes to get their emotions across. Which would explain why every word can be felt so strongly.
